So it's been a few weeks. We got to the new house on the 11th and it's now the 3rd of February, so that's about three weeks. In the first week we had about 5 plumbing leaks. Pow! We're realizing that there's more work in this house than we expected. The day we moved in, three of our neighbors came by and introduced themselves. Great folks!

First thing Ward said was "this will be a new experience for me, I've been here 10 years and never had a neighbor over here". Turns out the previous owner had been paying on a mortgage for 10 years on a house he wasn't even living in. He'd just drive by every week or so to collect the mail and then leave. In any event, that means we're working on repairing at least 10 years of neglect, which explains all the plumbing problems. That's not to mention all the original appliances from 1968 didn't work, so they've all got to be replaced. We picked up a fridge from a rental store and a dishwasher second-hand off of Craigslist. We still need a stove and this month we've got bigger bills, because we're still paying off the plumbers from repairing the stolen copper in the basement.

I finally got my static IP addresses fixed on Friday, after 3-4 solid days on the phone with support. They had to give me a new block of IP addresses, which meant a day or so of DNS propogation, but since my websites and mail servers had already been down for a few weeks, that didn't bother me at all. ;P

The long and the short of all this is that, yes, I am getting back to the cartooning and will be publishing the Secret Lives of Klingons and the other 2 books from my Kickstarter "soon", it's just taking longer than I'd hoped. But now that we're settled in our new house, at least we don't have to worry about the move anymore and once we find our groove, things should start falling into place.

He just let it sit for ten years?? Where was he living?? Why didn't he sell the house??

Wow, what a fixer-upper! I was having some building issues of my own, in which there was a steam leak which caused varnish inside the walls to leak. Yeuck. I had to transfer rooms. The walls were all puffy and it was weird. o___O

So it's been a month since you posted this...do you got all your stuff unpacked yet?

Oh jeez... I just realized I never replied to this... sorry... ^^;

so, we're definitely all unpacked now. ;P

I think we've fixed most of the major items in the house yet, except for one more foundation crack, every last window (which it looks like we'll probably have to wait on), and an electrical service upgrade.

I have no idea what the clown who owned this place was thinking. Apparently he had enough money that he could own a property and not care about it being destroyed by neglect... until he died and ownership reverted to the state. Our only theory about why he kept it is that he had lived here with his wife before she died and he never felt ready to let go of it, but had moved out somewhere else because he couldn't bear living here after she was gone. That may not be the truth, but it's our best guess.

Well we knew that any place we could get for the price that would be large enough for all six of us would need a lot of repair... just didn't expect it to be quite this much after seeing the house... we probably still would have bought this place, but would have planned it a little differently. So all things considered, we're still happy to have it. :la:

Wow, congrats! But at the same time, hope you get out of that mess soon.:ohnoes: I'd be careful to make sure it's not just the plumbing that needed fixing, especially for that period of neglect.

Thanks, Nick! Yeah, that occurred to us too. Fortunately all the outlets appear to be grounded, which is great! Our rent house in TX had been built about the same year and none of the outlets had been grounded. We ended up paying an electrician several hundred dollars at the time just to get 3 grounded outlets. But we figure even if all we do is make a few repairs, we'll end up making money out of the deal in a few years when the housing market recovers.

Ouch, that sucks.  Did you end up moving to Toledo or did you end up somewhere else?  Good luck with all the problems, that sounds bad, especially if you are up this way with the weather and all.  *waves*

Well the plumbing problems sucked, but we're getting them under control now.

What part of Ohio are you in again? Akron?

We ended up getting a place in Dayton, which I think is a great location because we're just a few hours from a lot of great stuff. Cinci ComicCon is an hour away. Not sure if there's one in Columbus. It's just 3 hours to Detroit for their ComicCon and the same 3 hours to Cleveland and only 4 hours to Chicago! :D And the house itself is really nice. There's a small pool in the back, which is something Tiffany always wanted -- it's broken currently, but we'll eventually get it fixed. Two living rooms, 4 bedrooms, decent sized garage and a big basement means lots of extra space we didn't have before. :D Even the lot is 0.4 acres instead of the 0.3 acres at the house we were renting in TX where the landlord wanted almost $10k more than we spent. According to the listings, we lost 150 square feet, but I don't even see how that's possible -- this house at least feels MUCH larger than the rent house in TX, even when I remove the extra basement and garage that aren't included in the square footage.

Nope, Toledo.  Awww, Dayton is a bit away from me, but yeah it's pretty central.  Do you think you'll check out Gencon in Indy this year?

Wow, that is a big difference.  And do you mean a living room and family room?  That is a thing up here, I've never heard two living rooms before.  XD  I hope you're able to fix it up soon, especially with all of the bad weather Ohio has been having.

Wow, Indianapolis. Only 2 hours away for GenCon, I'll have to try and make it out. :D Thanks for the head's up!

Yeah, they probably would describe it as a "family room". We've been calling it "the den" just so we have some way of distinguishing the two rooms. The repairs are going to take time, but I'm sure we'll get it all done eventually.

Welcome, it is seriously a most fun and amazing con.  More stuff to do than you can shake a stick at, if you go, be sure to pop in the True Dungeon, even if you don't have tickets.

Den also works.  Livingroom is usually the room at the front of the house while family room or den is at the back.  Heh heh.  I know you can do it!  Hope the weather isn't getting you down.  It's freezing up here.

Thanks! Yeah, weather's okay. Everybody says it's been unusually cold and snowy here lately... I guess that's why when I asked my neighbor how he was doing he said "tired of winter!" ;P I've been so busy with getting settled and making repairs that I've not noticed it much. Both rooms are on the front side of the house, but the one we're calling the living room is next to the entryway and the one we're calling the den is downstairs with doors to the pool and to the attached garage... I guess that does make the den "in back" when you consider it's got the rear door.

Oh, that is really interesting, now I almost want to see some sort of image or layout.  XD

I'm so sick of winter, it's been bad this year.

Let's put it this way: being a homeowner made me become a reasonably accomplished plumber - something I never thought would happen.  I can solder a good joint with the best of them now.  Blowtorch?  BRING IT ON!  (I'm just too dang cheap to pay the insane rates for plumbers ... unless it's something that's way too tricky for me.

Yep, that's where I'm at right now... I just got to the point where I'd spent too much on plumbers and picked up my first torch and solder kit.

Seriously, man.  You can spend about twenty bucks on supplies and do it yourself.  It's easy, especially with the number of how-to videos out there on the internet now.  Solder from the top, heat from the bottom so the heat draws the solder down, wait till the solder forms a drip on the bottom, and you're done.  Guaranteed seal.

Awesome news! :w00t:

(w-wow, paying for a house you just ignore; I've come across a few people who do that. where they get the money for it I'll never know.)

Haha, were the appliances vintage enough to pawn off?? ;) Must've been an interesting experience...
Again, :iconlawooplz:!!
