==========
Since I first posted this in 2007, this has always been one of my most popular comic strips. I redrew it recently in early March 2010, because I'd always felt a little self-conscious about the original image. I liked the idea a lot, and I didn't feel like the original image did the concept justice. So after more than two years lamenting the art, I finally redrew it digitally on my new tablet notebook. And I will say that now I am quite happy with the result.
Several years ago I'd planned to get into newspaper syndication. Since then I've realized though that the market for newspaper comics is shrinking, so getting into them is extraordinarily difficult... and then once you're there you've got severe limitations on the kind of comics you can produce (which is why you see mostly the same old jokes recycled over and over in the papers -- old people don't like technology; kids don't like vegetables or cleaning or homework; etc). And they're not paying very well with the industry being in such difficult shape.
So right now I'm working on alternatives. Eventually I plan to print some books once I've got enough content. And I've got t-shirts (right now I'm giving them away with commissions). And I'm hoping to get a table at the Dallas Webcomics Expo again in August (this is their 3rd year). I went last year. Fun little show. Something else I'd love to do is license some of my comics to other webzines, magazines or books. That'd be sweet!
Yeah, I'm not sure about what the magazines are paying these days... I think it's gone down in recent years too... thing about that market is you generally have to court the zines rather than the other way around, and you submit them in small batches so they can decide if they like any of the handful you're sending in (I think this is because they get a lot of submissions and it's a lot easier to pick something if they send you just 3-5 instead of a huge collection)... so it can be kind of time-consuming submitting to several of them every month. And right now I don't think I really have the time for it. But maybe in the next year or so.
