==========

Since I first posted this in 2007, this has always been one of my most popular comic strips. I redrew it recently in early March 2010, because I'd always felt a little self-conscious about the original image. I liked the idea a lot, and I didn't feel like the original image did the concept justice. So after more than two years lamenting the art, I finally redrew it digitally on my new tablet notebook. And I will say that now I am quite happy with the result. :D

More Aliens

Here's the original line art. I think it's really cool to see how far I've come since I first published this:

Great work. I could see these in newspapers and such.

Thanks, D!

Several years ago I'd planned to get into newspaper syndication. Since then I've realized though that the market for newspaper comics is shrinking, so getting into them is extraordinarily difficult... and then once you're there you've got severe limitations on the kind of comics you can produce (which is why you see mostly the same old jokes recycled over and over in the papers -- old people don't like technology; kids don't like vegetables or cleaning or homework; etc). And they're not paying very well with the industry being in such difficult shape.

So right now I'm working on alternatives. Eventually I plan to print some books once I've got enough content. And I've got t-shirts (right now I'm giving them away with commissions). And I'm hoping to get a table at the Dallas Webcomics Expo again in August (this is their 3rd year). I went last year. Fun little show. :D Something else I'd love to do is license some of my comics to other webzines, magazines or books. That'd be sweet! :D

Wonder if magazines would pay more. But printing books of these is a great idea. I love the humor in all of them. Quirky/silly/ironic

Thanks, D!

Yeah, I'm not sure about what the magazines are paying these days... I think it's gone down in recent years too... thing about that market is you generally have to court the zines rather than the other way around, and you submit them in small batches so they can decide if they like any of the handful you're sending in (I think this is because they get a lot of submissions and it's a lot easier to pick something if they send you just 3-5 instead of a huge collection)... so it can be kind of time-consuming submitting to several of them every month. And right now I don't think I really have the time for it. But maybe in the next year or so. :D

It's interesting to see how the same ideas can lead to such different results: we came up with essentially the same joke shortly after the film was released, and our early sketch is fairly similar to yours: [link]

In the intervening years before (re)launching our comic online, however, we took the idea in quite a different direction to you, turning it into a parody of the film poster: "The Unusual Suspects"

It's fascinating how the same seed of a joke can diverge so radically in the hands of different artists.

:D Yeah, I actually had the idea first and then worked back to the title. Never actually saw the film. I tried putting this idea on Threadless.com a while ago and the folks over there oddly didn't seem to get it... One guy suggested that it would be funnier if it was all different famous aliens like ET, etc. -- which eliminates the joke I was making entirely. But as a parody of the film poster the way you did it, it works. ;)

It's a good film - well worth watching at least once. It's one of those that is definitely at its best the first time you see it, before you know what happens.

Odd that they didn't appreciate it on Threadless. I guess it just goes to prove that humour isn't universal (and that no matter how obvious you make a joke there'll always be someone who doesn't get it!)

Yeah, that's true... That wasn't the only time that I got a very different response from the Threadless crowd than I did from DeviantArt either... I'd had this one that was a joke about the old Sorayama fembot paintings from the 80s and here it was very well liked and got a ton of views, but when I suggested making a version for Threadless I got mostly people complaining that they were offended by it. It was of a sexual nature, but then I know they actually printed "Afternoon Delight" which featured a pair of unicorns having sex, so it had to be about my presentation rather than the fact that there was sex in it. But either way it was odd to see how stark the contrast was between the two audience reactions. ;)

This has much better emphasis on the abductee and puts more humour, but i couldn't help but like the line-art version better since I could see some kind of simple sophistication and the emphasis on the aliens since they were the punchline

Ha! I can't win, can I? ;P

Thanks for the comment, much appreciated! I think you're right that the punchline is much more obvious in the original line art. They're not foreshortened at all, which helps to emphasize their sameness, and there's less to distract you from them with the abductee having been so vague and even the cop being much less detailed.
