Project Volunteer p28

A few weeks ago I agreed to illustrate 5 pages in the Project Volunteer graphic novel. It's turning out to be an interesting ride. There are some really challenging scenes in these 5 pages, so it's definitely getting me out of my comfort zone and stretching my abilities.

Page 28 is all about making Mike uncomfortable. Agatha puts him on the spot and he feels small and powerless and ultimately gives in. I've been using darks in the background in the previous pages because I know this novel is going to be printed black and white, so I'm adding extra darks to give the pages more depth. In the 3 frames with Mike on this page I tried to make the light and shadow look as though he's under a spotlight (or an interrogation lamp), not because he is, but because it's a visual representation of the way I expect he's feeling.

After some sleep I went back and resized these frames and gave Agatha ears. I think the revision is much more compelling and I decided to leave this one here for comparison. The updated version of page 28 is here: [link]
