Photojournalism by woohooligan Photojournalism by woohooligan
This is my impression of a lot of photographers... does that make me a bigot? ... Not most of the photographers on DA... a few... most of the photographers I see on DA would be more concerned about finding the world's most fabulous boobs, but when I hear about photojournalism or when I see "photojournalism", that image of "the world's saddest hobo" is generally what is conjured in my mind. It just seems like that's the one thing they're most interested in.

How about a photo of the saddest boobs in the world, think that'd be a prize worthy pic? :glomp:

If anyone wants to see the world's saddest hobo all they need to do is go across the alley road from my house. There are some sad ones over there. The other day I was going across the actual street to Dollar General and one of them yells "I LOVE YOU PRETTY LADY!" I just kept walking.

I saw a picture that won an award in my newspaper that was a homeless midget.

"King of saddest hobos" should have been the title.

p.s. They don't like "midget" -- gotta call 'em dwarfs.

Well, as I understand it, they are related to different conditions. One being physical and one that is genetic. A dwarf will have abnormally sized proportions whilst a "midget" will have only a small body/structure.

I'm fed up with political correctness, this is almost as bad as the movement for "African-Americans". News flash: Not everyone black is from Africa.

Yeah, but the idea of calling them all "african american" was only very short lived anyway... "black" has been the preferred term for decades now.

I don't know how true that is. Often, I still hear people chastised for referring to black people. Its moronic at heart, considering that there is no offensive connotation to it, just as there is none to "white."

But like I said, Dwarf =/= Midget so why should one be used in place of the other?

The Little People of America (that is actually the name of their organization) sent a press release recently stating officially that they prefer people not use the term "midget" because it had been previously used as a pejorative. Why that happened I don't know. Why is it perfectly okay for me to say "crap" but illegal for me to say "shit" on TV when the words are EXACTLY synonymous? I don't know. I just know that's what they prefer and so I call them that... (Also, dwarf is an official medical term. Midget was a colloquial term coined by PT Barnum and I suspect its being perceived as an insult has something to do with stereotypes of dwarfs as "sideshow freaks", since Barnum was famous for running one.)

Not sure what's up with you hearing people chastised for referring to "black people"... I see it on TV all the time (check out the Daily Show) and none of those folks are ever chastised for it. And after 35 years and having lived in Dalls TX, Austin TX, Jacksonville FL, Orlando FL, Ft Lauderdale FL, the UBER-conservative Charlottesville VA (where it was illegal to have a business partnership between two people of the same sex for fear of civil unions), small-town Iowa, Steamboat Springs CO, Omaha NE, Portland OR and Boston MA, I've never once heard anyone chastised for referring to "black people". Tiff was once reamed for referring to "people of color" because she wasn't sure at the time (before I met her) what was preferred (and despite the fact that their own organization is called the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP))... Maybe it's an oddity of the area where you live. Black is the overall nationally preferred term.
