Jack by woohooligan Jack by woohooligan
My first attempt at a pure digital painting. Learned a fair amount about coloring technique while I was working on this one... at least I feel like I did... no idea how many hours... more than usual... My comic strips usually only take an hour or two, though there are a couple of exceptions like I took a long time finishing None Shall Pass for the effect... I'm still not entirely happy with the flames and some of the other effects, I'm just not sure how to really improve on them at present.

Critique away! :la:

p.s. I know the hands are different sizes. They're at different angles and different distances from the camera.

Well Jack was created entirely in photoshop, which is something I don't usually do. My other illustrations were created as pencil sketches, then inked with brush-nib pens (Micron brand) and scanned rather than photographed using a Mustek brand A3 size "ScanExpress" scanner. [link] In the not too distant future I'd like to try some other color media (I was fond of colored pencil when I was in high-school) though for now I'm doing all my color work in PhotoShop.

not really intended to be feminine as much as twiggy / spindly ... but then shadows, etc. Glad you like it either way. :thanks:

Nice! As far as critique goes, I think that cell shading would suit this better especially for mood. Also, I think that the light parts of the picture should be shifted more towards orange, particularly the light on his leg. The moon is behind him, so the only real light hitting his leg would be orange. The same would go for the white cloth under the undercoat thing. XD

I like the cut-out way you did the scenery.

Hey thanks for the critique. Took me a while to get back to reply on this 'cause we were moving to Portland and were fairly busy. There actually is a yellow ambient glow around the face that crosses over a lot of the white on the chest, but looking at it again it seems I turned its opacity down too far to really tell that it's there. Cell shading is a new concept for me -- part of the reason I didn't reply sooner, 'cause I hadn't had the time to research it.

Thanks for the recommendation. I'll probably fiddle with it some & see what I like (although not on this piece in particular since it's already finished). Though I did sell a large poster of this on CafePress the other day -- which means September is the 2nd time my CafePress store has paid for itself in the ~1year I've maintained it. It's not much, but hopefully soon I'll have more cash to advertise it and more time to work on new illustrations to put up.

Nice work, I think that Jack's form is quite well done; tall, angular, scary... Everything that it should be :)
