I realized recently that while I'd love to receive more critiques, I wasn't doing my part to write them. So I've committed myself to take personal responsibility for this situation by writing at least two critiques each month. And several of my friends and watchers are joining me.

Not a problem! DeviantArt was around for several years before they added the critique system for premium members. Back then we all wrote our critiques into the comments, so you can still write them that way. If you want to go an extra step, you can write the critiques into your journal and then just paste a link to your journal in the art comments, that way your watchers can see your critiques. You won't be able to put the stamp on your profile, but you can favorite the news article.

But I can't make art, I can only appreciate it!
Psshh! First, I don't believe you can't make art... but more importantly, Siskel and Ebert never made a movie did they? You know what you like when you look at art, and I'm sure you can offer helpful suggestions as well. Granted that if you're not making any art, then you won't be receiving any critiques, but I see no reason why you can't give them if you want to help.
